This year has been a particularly beautiful spring. The long winter of life-giving water (sorry, people of Boston and Buffalo!) has resulted in a profusion of daffodils and cherry blossoms, and now the start of tulips and dogwoods.
This is in our back yard. We also spent some time planting vegetables in the beds. In a few weeks, we hope to see some beans and peas come up. We also planted rosemary, basil, variegated sage, tomatoes, lettuce, kale, eggplants and peppers.
Spring is the season of new beginnings and new birth. As a result of a run of abnormally high fertility among family and friends, I have been spending a lot of time on baby quilts.
Here is a some images of one that is in progress. I am hand quilting around many of the letters on this whole cloth quilt (fabric by Moda). I just love this for a slightly larger baby quilt, one that can be used to set a baby on to play and maybe begin learning letters.
This quilt is similar to one I did earlier. I had bought enough fabric for two, and wanted to spend some time hand quilting. My very first experiments with quilting, and the quilts that gave me the confidence to pursue quilting as my hobby in retirement were two, matching, hand quilted whole cloth quilts. I’ve learned a great deal since then, but, even looking back, I’m pretty pleased with how they turned out.
These are details of the first two quilts. I loved the paisley pattern. I made twin quilts for our bed, since, as often as not, I am cold and my husband is hot. This way, when he throws off the quilt, it doesn’t double up on to me!
Today was a lovely day and the woods beckoned. The temperature was perfect, and the dappled sun and shade made me think of patchwork. Victoria and Albert appreciated the exercise, and love every opportunity to run around the park near our home. It has miles of hiking and biking trails, and follows several lovely rivers, that feed into the bay
We feel lucky to live in such a beautiful area, and spring has always been my favorite time of year. There is something about gardens, blossoms, sunshine and babies that makes a person feel optimistic!
